Announcements for the Week of January 22nd, 2018

Good Morning, this is Jessica Emory the Principal of Harkers Island with the announcements for the coming weeks. This announcement can also be located on the school website on the main page.

 

Week Events:

For the week of January 22nd:

  • Wednesday the 24th is the first “Pastries with the Principal” OPTIONAL PARENT MEETING. The meeting starts at 8:05 in the cafeteria of the school. Pastries, coffee, and juice will be served.

Ms. Emory will be hosting this optional parent meeting once a month as an opportunity to get to know her, receive updates on the school happenings, and discuss significant school topics.  This first meeting will be on the following the topics:

  • Who is Ms. Emory (Where is she from?  How did she end up here?)
  • Harkers Island Construction Projects (Lobby, Library, Main Office)
  • CCS Snow Make-up Days (When and Why)

For the week of January 29th:

  • There are no significant announcements for this week.

 

Make-Up Snow Days:

  • Snow day January Thursday the 4th:  make-up day January 25th
  • Snow day January Friday the 5th: make-up day April 5th
  • Snow day January Monday the 8th: make-up day April 6th
  • Snow day January Thursday the 18th: no make-up day announced yet
  • The 30th of March has been turned into an Early Release Day.

 

Morning Drop-Off

The doors to the school are not open in the morning for morning drop-off earlier than 7:30.  Parents are required to wait until 7:30 for drop- off.  This is a CCS and HIES policy due to the supervision availability of staff and workday hours.  Thank you for supporting our staff and policy but not dropping your student(s) off before 7:30.

Week Events:

For the week of January 15th:

  • Monday the 15th there is no school because it is the MLK Holiday

For the week of January 22nd:

  • Monday the 8th was a snow day for students and two-hour delay workday for staff.
  • There are no significant school events this week.

Week Events:

For the week of January 1st:

  • Students are on Holiday Break from the 18th of December through January 1st.  Students return to school on January 2nd.  The school will be closed during this time and workers will be working on the old office space and the new lobby expansion.

For the week of January 8th:

  • There are no significant school events this week.

 

Construction

The Main Office, Principal’s Office, and Counselor’s Office have moved to the new spaces.  Over break demolition on the old main office and construction on the new Main Lobby will start.  We will be under construction for a few months while this project is completed.

Announcements for the Week of December 11th, 2017

Good Morning, this is Jessica Emory the Principal of Harkers Island with the announcements for the coming weeks. This announcement can also be located on the school website on the main page.

 

Week Events:

For the week of December 11th:

  • Tuesday the 12th at 1:30 is the Harkers Island Holiday performance.  Family and friends are invited to attend.  Doors will open no earlier than 1:20 due to dress rehearsal.  Parents may check out students after the performance in the teacher’s classrooms by signing them out with the classroom teacher.  Specific directions will be provided at the end of the performance.  Santa and Mrs. Claus will be available for photos by the HIES sign after the performance, for students who are checked out.  Lunch schedules are altered this day with students eating at different times.  Outside lunch guests will not be able to eat with students this Tuesday.
  • Friday the 15th is a half day with the student day ending at 12:00. 

 

Holiday Break

Students are on Holiday Break from the 18th of December through January 1st.  Students return to school on January 2nd.  The school will be closed during this time and workers will be working on the old office space and the new lobby expansion.

 

Holiday Parade
This weekend is the Down East holiday parade in Otway.  HIES will be participating.  If you are interested in participating with us, check the flyer that was sent home with your student for details.

 

Main Office and Moves

We are in the process of moving the Main Office, Counselor’s Office, and Principal’s office to the newly constructed spaces.  We are excited to begin using our new sick and medicine distribution room.  Thank you for your patience during our move.

Announcements for the Week of December 4, 2017

Week Events:

For the week of December 4th:

  • Please be patient with us this week as we work to move into the new office space.
  • Wednesday – Friday the students will have the opportunity to shop in the PTO hosted Santa Shop.  The shop contains small, non-pricey items that students can purchase for family and friends for the holiday.  Students will be able to shop on either Wednesday or Thursday in their special with Ms. Kari and can return to the shop on Friday in case they saw something they want to purchase but were unable to earlier in the week.

 

For the week of December 11th:

  • Tuesday the 12th at 1:30 is the Harkers Island Holiday performance.  Family and friends are invited to come.  Santa and Mrs. Claus will be here too.
  • Friday the 15th is a half day with the student day ending at 12:00. 

 

Decoy Weekend

It’s Decoy Festival Weekend.  Come on by the school and join in the festivities.  Doors open at 8:30.

 

Collecting Clothing

We are collecting new packages of underwear for our kindergarten age and first grade age students as well as gently used shirts and shorts/pants.  These items will be used for emergency purposes when students have an accident and we cannot get ahold of a parent.  We are also collecting baby wipes.  Please drop off donations in the main office.

Announcements for the Week of November 27, 2017

Good Evening, this is Jessica Emory the Principal of Harkers Island with the announcements for the coming weeks. This announcement can also be located on the school website on the main page.

Week Events:

For the week of November 27th:

  • Wednesday the 29th we will be taking class pictures for our school holiday card.  Students are invited to dress in holiday themed clothing including hats, headbands, etc. to help make the pictures festive.
  • Friday the 1st is a half day for students because HIES hosts the Decoy Festival for the weekend.  Students need to be picked up by 12:00.

For the week of December 4th:

  • The PTO is hosting a Santa Shop December 6th – 11th in the Media Center.  This is an opportunity for students to purchase items for the holidays for their families and friends.  Grade levels are assigned shopping dates and times.

Decoy Festival:

Thank you for your support of this amazing weekend. 

·We are still collecting donations of cool whip and vanilla wafers. 

·The class that sells the most Decoy Raffle tickets will get a PTO sponsored pizza party.

  • We are still in need of volunteers to help peel potatoes this week at 8:30 am Tues, Wed, Thurs and volunteers to help work the gate door on Saturday.  Sign-ups are located on the website.
  • The building will start smelling like clam chowder on Wednesday and it permeates clothing.  This is an FYI that the staff will not be dressed in their finest. 
  • Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday the students will be served a bag lunch from the cafeteria due to setup taking place in the kitchen.

  • Tuesday the 7th report cards go home to parents via envelopes sent with the student.
  • Friday the 10th there is no school because it is Veterans Day.

For the week of November 18th:

  • There are no significant events for this week.

 

Bus Bucks

We have started an incentive for safe, respectful, and responsible behavior on the bus.  Each route all students who follow the rules for the entire route will get a paper Bus Buck.  Bucks are deposited in the Bus Box outside of Ms. Burroughs’ office.  Daily drawings for prizes are held.

 

Cell Phones

For the week of October 30th:

  • Monday the 30th the kindergarten students will have a dental screening in the morning.
  • Tuesday the 31st is a half day, with the student day ending at 12:00.  Students are permitted to wear costumes to school as long as they do not include sunglasses, weapons, masks, and face make-up.  Students may bring a few pieces of candy to school but are not permitted to bring their entire candy bag.

For the week of November 6th:

Announcements for the Week of October 23, 2017

 

Good Morning, this is Jessica Burroughs the Principal of Harkers Island.  I was finally able to start at Harkers Island on Monday of this week.  It has been a true joy and blessing to join the Harkers Island Family and the decision to move here has been confirmed this week with each child, staff member, and family I have had the pleasure of meeting.  I look forward to serving Harkers Island Elementary and your families this year and for many years to come.  Every Saturday morning I will be sending out a weekly announcement.  The announcement can also be located on the school website.

 

Week Events:

For the week of October 23rd:

  • This week is Red Ribbon week where we will be working with Ms. Davis the counselor, to encourage our students to take a stand against substance abuse.  We are conducting a Spirit Week in support of Red Ribbon.
    • Monday the 23rd – Wear Red
    • Tuesday the 24th – Be on a Drug Free Team and wear sports memorabilia
    • Wednesday the 25th- Put a Sock on Drugs and wear crazy socks
    • Thursday the 26th– Take a Stand for a Drug Free Land and wear red, white, and blue
    • Friday the 27th – Put a Cap on Drugs and wear a hat at school

* Students cannot wear face makeup or masks and hats are reserved for Friday only.
